Curved House

Designed by John Brennan, this house was featured in the Architecture Foundation publication and exhibition, “A Guide to Britain’s Best Young Architectural Practices”.

This individual house located in North West Scotland, is designed to a curved plan to protect the garden area from the effects of a very exposed location. Originally designed by John Brennan whilst working at Gaia Architects, the completion of the house exterior and internal fit-out was undertaken by Brennan & Wilson Architects.

Internally there is a generous bedroom wing with home office and library. The first floor features an open gallery following the curve of the building. Externally the curve creates a sheltered seating area; a perfect spot to enjoy the stunning view. An integral south facing conservatory provides passive solar gain.

The structure was built from a timber frame with high levels of recycled newspaper insulation. Externally the building is clad in locally sourced Douglas Fir and features a reclaimed Scottish slate roof.
