Nine new dwellings for Orkney designed and constructed to Certified Passive House standard, to provide low energy living with exceptional thermal comfort. Each house has been orientated with the main living spaces to the south, with large window openings to ensure the maximisation of solar gain for passive house standard. Secondary accommodation such as bathrooms, utility rooms and kitchens are orientated to the north. A flat roof entrance porch link, and a connected single storey double garage provides weather protected means of access.
There are four varying house designs which are to be distributed throughout the site providing a range of accommodation size for the inhabitants. House type 3 has been designed with a second entrance door from the porch to offer flexible accommodation that can be used as a home office or separate living space for an elderly relative.
